10 Reasons to Get Active This Weekend
Is it Friday yet? We work so hard during the week that a lot of us can't wait until the weekend. But, do your weekends go by too fast or do you find yourself wasting time deciding what you are going to do this weekend? Check out these 10 ideas that the crew at Stewardship came up with to make your weekend last a bit longer and way more enjoyable.
1. It’s nice out
Summer’s just around the corner! Now’s the time to be active outside. You can go for a run without overheating or take a vigorous walk without needing a shower. Take advantage of cooler temps while you can.
2. Your kids need fresh air
After months of being cooped up inside, kids need space to run around, kick, jump and tumble. They need to laugh loud and scream and be silly—basically anything you ask them to tone down at home. Head to the local park and tell your kids to go crazy. Then join them.
3. You’ll sleep better
Wear yourself out during the day and you’re bound to crash harder and sleep better at night. This is especially true for those of us who tend to be more sedentary. Lying down after a day of sitting down feels kinda lazy. Lying down after working out? Glorious.
4. Moving your body moves your brain
Studies show that just 20 minutes of physical activity boosts your brain’s capabilities. We’re talking increased retention and better information processing. Having trouble understanding a new concept or remembering an old one? A little exercise can help you sort things out.
5. It’s a great excuse to binge listen
Exercise and podcasts make for great friends. Spend your active time catching up on the latest podcast craze or listening to a sermon series from your favorite pastor. The voices will motivate you to keep going, and the exercise will make you feel not-so-bad about all the listening. Win win!
6. Exercise can be fun
Wait! Come back! We’re serious about all the fun you can have working out. You just have to think beyond lifting weights. Getting active might mean a hike in the woods, playing soccer with your kids, taking a walk through the neighborhood, or even joining a class in your community.
7. Your New Year’s goals miss you
It’s May already. How many times have you talked to your goals since January? They’re lonely.Today is their lucky day. Research shows that people who exercise find it easier to follow through on other goals. A walk today may actually encourage you to clean out the garage tomorrow.
8. You’ll be ready for anything
Most people exercise because they want to look good—but you should exercise to feel good. Working out builds strength, and strength increases energy. With renewed energy, you’ll be ready for whatever comes your way.
9. Endorphins, baby
Endorphins are the best natural defense against stress. If this week was a busy one or you’re overwhelmed by your kids or work, you need some of these bad boys. Endorphins give you the warm fuzzies and make room for you to think without distraction.
10. So you can eat a bit more
Cake, chips and salsa, barbecue, chili . . . need we say more? You can burn calories just to burn ‘em. Or you can burn calories to even things out when you eat. Saturday night dinner tastes better when you earn it.
